In a major landslip following heavy rain on Wednesday, a hairpin curve on the Kollam-Theni National Highway at Lower Camp between Kumily and Cumbom was blocked with mud and debris.

It would take one or two days to clear the debris, say officials.

Earth caved in the forest area of a stream and a portion of the ghat road collapsed. Tamil Nadu Police and workers were trying to remove the debris including rocks and timbers deposited by the flash flood.

A portion of the side wall of the highway road was also damaged

Reports reaching here said that there were no reports of casualties.

The road has heavy traffic in the morning and evening with taxis carrying workers from Tamil Nadu to the cardamom plantations and back in the border areas.

However, there was not much traffic when the landslip occurred.

The vehicles are now stranded on both sides.

There was heavy rain in Idukki district on Wednesday afternoon.

The district administration had issued an alert after the Met department warned of torrential rain accompanied by wind.

An official of the District Calamity Management Cell said that isolated landslips were reported in the high range areas. They were compiling the data being received from various villages, said an official.

However, he said that no major rain related incident was reported in the district.
