he move to provide a dedicated water supply line to the Government Ayurveda Medical College, Tripunithura, will provide relief to the hospital that has been reeling under severe water shortage.

Chairing the meeting called on Thursday to resolve the crisis in the medical college and hospital, K. Babu, Minister for Excise, said that Rs. 70,000 will be paid to KWA to provide the connection within a week. In the meantime, two water tanker lorries will be deployed daily to meet the demand, he said.

The suggestion to have a direct water supply line from KWA’s sump in Karingachira is also being probed. A feasibility study for the project will be taken up for which Rs. 50 lakh would be provided. This amount was earlier given to KWA to take up water treatment plant project for the medical college, which never materialised. The meeting also decided to run a pilot project for setting up the treatment plant. However, expenses for the project will be met only after the pilot project is done.

The Minister also said that a meeting with the Health Minister will be called soon in Thiruvananthapuram to take decisions about the functioning of the medical college. District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam, Principal and superintendent of the medical college and hospital and members of the Hospital Development Society were present at the meeting.

The medical college has five wells which were being used to supply water to the medical college and the hostels. The KWA line to the college provides erratic supply, the medical college authorities told The Hindu. Besides the well, a borewell was also dug to supply water to the undergraduate hostel for women where worms were found in the water the other day.

Top officials in the medical college said that quality test conducted for well water by KWA and the Analytical Laboratory had provided different results.
