As part of moves to overhaul its work culture and to make the working of officials more result-oriented, all engineers of the Kerala Water Authority will soon be asked to work as per an annual work plan.

A press note issued here by KWA Managing Director A. Shainamol said the work plan — issued to all engineers from AEs to CEs — would be reviewed every month. Increasing the number of connections, reducing non-revenue water, reducing arrears in water connection fee, and ensuring timely completion of projects, would be components of the plan. Special emphasis would be given to provide water to all.

Steps had already been taken to make the IT wing in the KWA more efficient. In addition to overhauling the IT unit, discussions were on with the College of Engineering to use the service of students to develop software for the unit. The current software would be subject to a quality audit and defects rectified. An online system of recording the KWA’s electro-mechanical assets and to record their repairs was nearing completion.

Online systems would soon be in place for monitoring the progress of KIIFB schemes and court cases in which the KWA is a party. The ‘Janamithra’ software designed to redress public’s complaints in a time-bound manner was now being used in all KWA divisions. Using this software the MD and the Water Resources Minister would be able to issue directives. Of the 5,194 complaints received from the public since March last, 4,847 were settled using ‘Janamithra.’

Under the ‘Neerurava’ scheme launched by Water Resources Minister Mathew T. Thomas in March this year, rainwater harvesting pits were dug near water sources at all KWA offices. A pond is being dug at the 20-acre headquarters complex of the KWA as part of this scheme. The waterbody can hold 12.5 lakh litres of water.
