Kundara minor’s suicide: grandmother arrested

For not preventing girl’s sexual abuse

The maternal grandmother of the 10-year-old girl who committed suicide at Kundara in January has been arrested under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

The girl is suspected to have committed suicide after continued sexual harassment by her maternal grandfather, who has already been arrested and remanded in the case.

The grandmother, despite being aware of her husband sexually assaulting the child, neither prevented it nor informed authorities, and hence she was arrested.

This is tantamount to connivance, which is a serious offence under POCSO, the police said.

In hospital

The grandmother is admitted to a government hospital at Kundara. A police team headed by Kottarakara Dy.SP B. Krishnakumar recorded her arrest at the hospital on Saturday and produced the records at a POCSO special court here, which remanded her in the special cell at the Kottarakara sub-jail.

But since the accused is yet to be discharged she will remain in the hospital under police vigil.

When she is discharged she will be lodged in the jail. The couple have also been listed as accused in a second POCSO case where a 14-year-old girl was sexually abused by the same man.
