Janadhipathya Samrakshana Samithy (JSS) founder leader and former Minister K.R. Gouri turned 96 on Saturday.

The celebrations were held at the Rotary Club hall here.

She launched a tree planting campaign, organised by party workers, to mark the occasion.

The cake-cutting ceremony was held in front of a large crowd. A flower crown was bestowed upon her by the workers.

Apart from JSS workers, several political leaders, including Left Democratic Front convener Vaikom Viswan and MLAs A.M. Arif and P. Thilothaman visited her.

A prominent leader of the communist movement, she was expelled from the CPI(M) two decades ago, after which she formed the JSS.

Her party became part of the United Democratic Front, but quit it later. She campaigned for the Left Democratic Front candidate in the Aruvikkara Assembly by-election recently.
