The State government is keen on beginning classes at the Government Medical College at Konni this year itself, Revenue Minister and local MLA Adoor Prakash has said.

He told reporters here on Friday that Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar had moved the Union Ministry of Health, requesting the mandatory inspection of the college facility by the Medical Council of India. The Pathanamthitta General Hospital will function as the medical college hospital till the commissioning of the full-fledged medical college and hospital complex under construction at Perinjottackal in Konni. This has been the norm in the case of other government medical colleges too in the State, he said. Getting sufficient number of teachers for the medical college is a major issue, the Minister added.

The District Collector has been asked to finding appropriate buildings to temporarily house the medical college. The Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium at Pramadom too could be used to conducting classes, he said.

Mr. Prakash said the Konni Assembly segment had witnessed development works valued at Rs.600 crore ever since the United Democratic Front government came to power in 2011. The work on the medical college and the establishment of a township surrounding would be over in seven months.

The medical college would come up on 50 acres of land at Perinjottackal. Eight acres had been allotted for Kendriya Vidyalaya.
