Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Wednesday that he had received assurance that the State would get food grains for its entire population, at a conference of Congress chief ministers and PCC chiefs convened by Sonia Gandhi early this week to discuss implementation of the Food Security Act.

The Act would cover only 42 per cent of the population and grains for them would be supplied at Rs.3 a kg. However, the statutory rationing system was in force in the State from 1966 with assurance on supply of grains by the Centre. So, Kerala would get grains for the rest of the population also. The price for this would have to be fixed by the Cabinet. Though it was suggested that the State should lift the grains at the MSP price, he had sought the price at present applicable for rice supplied to the BPL category (Rs.6.20 a kg.) He added that the implementation of the Act would be a great achievement.
