Govt. should enact suitable laws for their welfare

P. Ramabhadran, State president of the Kerala Dalit Federation (KDF), has called for a special package to rehabilitate transgender people.

“Had the 2014 Supreme Court verdict been implemented, the transgender people could have led a better life now,” Mr. Ramabhadran said while addressing a gathering here on Sunday after inaugurating the State leadership camp of the Kerala Dalit Mahila Federation (KDMF).

He said that based on the Supreme Court verdict, the Central and State governments should enact suitable laws for the welfare of the transgender people.

“Such people are ostracised even by their own family members. Society is not very accommodative to them. They are not only denied proper education and jobs, but also unable to travel freely,” he said.

Mr. Ramabhadran said that at a time when atrocities against women and children were on the rise, it was highly unbecoming on the part of the police to have used force on transgender people in Kozhikode, Thrissur, and Kochi recently.

He wanted the government to carry out a survey on the status of the transgender people. Such people were denied treatment at government hospitals and this situation should change, Mr. Ramabhadran said.

KDMF State president P.K. Radha presided.
