Karunanidhi’s statements of no concern to Kerala: V.S.

September 23, 2009 03:03 pm | Updated 03:03 pm IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi's recent statements over the Mullaperiyar issue need not be of concern to Kerala.

Mr. Karunanidhi was making statements in response to criticisms by the Opposition in his State. As far as Kerala was concerned, it had received Central clearance for carrying out the survey for the proposed new dam at Mullaperiyar. The Union Minister concerned had communicated to him the decision of the Standing Committee on Wildlife in that regard.

Mr. Achuthanandan added that Kerala's concern was over the safety of about 40 lakh people living downstream of the Mullaperiyar dam if something happened to the old structure.

He was replying to questions from the media at a briefing on Cabinet decisions.
