The Calicut International Airport at Karipur has passed a historic milestone by becoming the first airport in the country to implement zero waste management effectively.
The waste management system being implemented at Karipur with the support of the Vengeri-based Niravu is projected to be a model for all airports in the country. “It’s a historic day for Calicut International Airport by being a model for other airports or any government or non-government establishment in the country,” said Suchitwa Mission executive director K. Vasuki while addressing a gathering at Karipur on Tuesday. “Segregation is the ABC of waste management,” she said. She advised the audience to recycle as much as they could and also reduce consumption. “We should despise the disposable and adore the reusable,” she said.
Scrap dealers’ role
Describing scrap dealers as the biggest supporters of environment conservation, Dr. Vasuki said that plans were afoot to recognise them and encourage them to do better business.
