Authorities assure them to meet their demands

July 29, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 06:14 am IST - KANNUR:

An agitation by students of the Kannur University School of Legal Studies (SLS) and the School of Health Sciences (SHS) on the university’s Thalassery campus at Palayad was called off following an assurance of the university authorities to meet their demands.

While the SLS students were agitating in protest against the university authorities’ alleged failure to renew affiliation of the Bar Council for the LLB course, the SHS students were protesting against the non-renewal of the recognition of the Indian Paramedical Council (IPC) for the three-year M.Sc courses in biochemistry, microbiology, and laboratory technology.

The agitation, started under the joint aegis of the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the Kerala Students Union (KSU) from July 25, was called off following talks with the university authorities on Thursday.

Bar Council inspection

When contacted, university Pro Vice Chancellor T. Ashokan, who led the talks, said the university talked to Bar Council officials and got an assurance that its inspection team would visit the SLS by mid-August.

He said it was also decided to contract the work of constructing a moot court facility at the SLS this week itself.

The admission of the new batch of students at the SLS would be decided on the basis of the consultation with the Bar Council team, he said.

IPC recognition

Dr. Ashokan also said the university also decided to submit a request for the renewal of the IPC recognition through the State Health Ministry.

The courses up to the 2012 batches had the IPC recognition, he said.

University Syndicate member M. Prakashan, Parent-Teacher Association president Thottathil Vasu, and Registrar Balakrishnan Keezhoth were among those present at the talks.
