: Justice K. Narayana Kurup, chairman, State Police Complaints Authority, has called upon the authorities to make healthcare affordable for the common man.

While addressing the convocation ceremony of the Kerala University of Health Sciences, here, he said the government has the constitutional responsibility to provide facilities improvement of public health.

Health was important and a nation cannot exist without healthy citizens, he said. However, quality health care has become unaffordable for the common man, he added. He stressed the need for preventive measures like exercise against diseases.

Though modern medicine and technology had contributed much to mankind, most of the diagnostic techniques were not to the common man. Medical professionals depended on technological gadgets for diagnosis of ailments to such an extent that they have almost become slaves to technology abdicating their clinical judgment, he said. Whenever medical negligence produces tragic consequences, the attitude of the doctors and hospital authorities also warrant a radical change.

Instead of attempt to manipulate or to suppress the mistake, attempts should be made to redesign systems, he said.
