A two-week-old girl in the remote Attappady, one of the largest tribal belts in Kerala, died due to respiratory illness on Sunday.

The infant, born to Murugan and Suchitra of Thutttara Ooru in Puthur, weighed 2 kg at birth and had breathing problems, Health Department sources said.

She was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where she died on Sunday.

The woman was admitted to a hospital on May 6 at the tribal super specialty hospital at Kottathara following pregnancy-related problems.

The child was born of caesarean section and developed breathing trouble the next day.

This year, seven newborns have died so far, including three this month.
