Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar on Monday launched the Physical Health and Fitness Profile Card for Kendriya Vidyalayas under the Swasth Bachche Swasth Bharat programme. The national-level launch of the programme was held at Kendriya Vidyalaya, NAD, Aluva.

Physical activity is a must in schools and should go with a nutritious diet and clean habits, the Minister said. Children should do household chores, the Minister said, adding children these days seemed least interested in housework and parents felt their wards should focus only on academics.

Mr. Javadekar said the government, while reverting to compulsory board examination in Class X, had also introduced a system of students’ assessment called Learning Outcomes. “It is about minimum competency.” Skills at language, mathematics, and science would be assessed as per the minimum competence at a particular age. Other schools are expected to follow the health card system introduced by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS), he said.

Mohammed Y. Safirulla, District Collector, and Rear Admiral R.J. Nadkarni, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, participated.

Focus on sports

The health card is a yearly progress report of the student in locomotor skills such as running, hopping, skipping, dodging, jumping and landing; skills in games such as cricket and football, underarm throw, overarm throw, dribbling with hands and feet, beam walk, one-foot balance and other activities measuring speed, strength, flexibility, agility, among others. A new card will be issued every year. Health cards will issued from Classes 1 to 12.

Differently abled

There are separate parameters for differently abled children.

The card also gives details of nutritional values of foods, suggests daily routines, correct postures, and balance of school bag.
