The green movements in the district welcomed the decision of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), in enforcing stringent restrictions over the huge concrete constructions in the hill district.
Stating the decision of the DDMA was a bold one, N. Badusha, president of Wayanad Prakruthi Samrakshana Samiti, said that unlimited construction of huge buildings in the ecologically sensitive areas was posing a threat to the environment and for the safe and peaceful living of citizens in Wayanad.
Lakkidi model
A restriction similar to one imposed in Lakkidi area should be imposed in Mupainadu, Mepadi, Thariyode and Padinharethara grama panchayat limits also as huge constructions for resorts were under way in the ecologically sensitive areas of these grama panchayats, E.K. Sakeerhussain, secretary, Green cross, an environmental organisation in the district said.
Mr. Sakeerhussain, who has been fighting a legal battle in the Kerala High Court for the past two years for imposing restrictions over huge constructions in Lakkidi area, urged the DDMA to not permit constructions above three floors in municipal areas in the district.
