Green activist Dr. A. Latha passes away

She had been on a crusade against proposed Athirappilly hydro-electric project for more than 25 years

Eminent environmental activist and leader of the anti-Athirappilly project agitation Dr. A. Latha passed away at her residence at Ollur, near here, on Thursday. She was 51 and was suffering from cancer for some time.

Director of the Chalakudy River Research Centre, Dr. Latha had been on a crusade against the proposed Athirappilly hydro-electric project for more than 25 years. She fought for the protection of the Chalakudy river system and the settlements of Kadar Tribes.

Dr. Latha, who has a doctorate in agriculture, played a key role in policy formation and legal enactment related to water policy, sand mining and watershed management in the State.

She was active in creating awareness among students of schools and colleges in the state on needs of environmental protection.
