Thrissur Pooram concluded on Monday afternoon with the “Upacharam Cholli Piriyal” ceremony.
The farewell ceremony, in which idols of the Paramekkavu Bhagavathy and the Thiruvambady Bhagavathy were taken from the Thekkinkad Maidan to the respective temples, marked the finale of 30-hour Pooram celebrations.
The ceremonies ended with a magnificent display of fireworks (Pakal Vedikkettu). All the ceremonies of Sunday were re-enacted on Monday.
A large number of local residents, including women and children, attended the celebrations on the concluding day, which is called “Thattakathe Pooram”.
Processions carrying idols of deities were taken to Sree Vadakkumnathan temple in the morning. Elephants Thiruvambadi Sivasundar and Sree Padmanabhan carried the idols of Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu respectively.
Pandimelam, led by Kizhakkoot Aniyan Marar, accompanied the procession of the Thiruvambady side while Peruvanam Kuttan Marar led the percussion ensembles on the Paramekkavu side.
Meanwhile, the main fireworks display of the Pooram was held at 3 a.m. Huge crowds thronged Swaraj Round and watched the display. The main road and bylanes were packed with people.
Thrissur Pooram will be celebrated next year on May 9.
