Government keen on animal husbandry schemes for prisoners

August 15, 2009 03:31 pm | Updated 03:31 pm IST - Thrissur:

Minister for Animal Husbandry C. Divakaran has said that the government is keen to start animal husbandry schemes for the rehabilitation of prisoners. He was addressing inmates of the Viyyur Central Jail on Saturday after inaugurating goat and mushroom farms there.

"Released prisoners may approach the government collectively or individually to start cattle, goat or poultry farms. Projects submitted by them will be approved," he told the inmates.

He said the government would like to revise the prison rules. "The government has taken a liberal stand in the release of prisoners who serve long terms. Repeated efforts should be taken to improve the health of prisoners and the food given to them. Vocational training must also be extended."
