Forward Bloc makes overtures to Congress in Kerala

After waiting in vain for years to gain entry into the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, the All India Forward Bloc has begun moves to join hands with Congress.

Forward Bloc general secretary G. Devarajan called on Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V.M. Sudheeran here on Wednesday and told reporters after the meeting that the State party leadership would take a decision on the question of allying with the Congress at its meeting in Kollam on Thursday. "We would be the second party after the RSP to move away from the LDF," he said.

The RSP had moved out of the LDF in 2014 on being denied the Kollam Lok Sabha seat. Its nominee N.K. Pramachandran had trounced CPI(M) Polit Bureau member M.A. Baby from the constituency as a UDF candidate. The RSP is contesting in five seats in the May 16 Assembly elections as a constituent of the Congress-led alliance.

The Forward Bloc does not enjoy much ground-level support in Kerala and, possibly on account of that, the CPI(M) has been reluctant to entertain its repeated pleas for membership in the LDF.
