Most of the drinking water schemes in the district are either unusable or have been abandoned midway, according to district panchayat president K.V. Sumesh.
Announcing the decision to prepare a detailed report on the drinking water schemes launched in the district so far, district panchayat president told the panchayat meeting here on Tuesday that while many of the completed projects have been found ineffectual, some of the projects have been dropped mid-way.
“Ninety-five per cent of drinking water projects in the district are found to be ineffectual,” Mr. Sumesh said adding that often many of these projects were started without conducting any proper study.
He said all future drinking water projects in the district should be started only after conducting detailed feasibility studies.
The panchayat meeting was told that 64.18 per cent plan fund utilisation has so far been achieved by the panchayat. The meeting was told that the fund utilisation is expected to go up considerably by March 31. Mr. Sumesh told the meeting that stringent action will be taken against contractors who inordinately delay completion of the works.
