A workshop organised by the National Fishworkers Forum (NFF) here has urged the Central and State governments to ensure the security of fishermen operating up to 200 nautical miles from the coast.
Pointing out that incidents of fishing boats being rammed by big ships were on the rise on Indian waters, NFF general secretary T. Peter, who presided over the workshop, called for urgent steps to prevent such accidents at sea.
Highlighting the reckless plunder of marine resources by deep sea trawlers and the appropriation of large tracts of the coast for tourism and industrial projects and construction of ports and harbours, the workshop said the traditional fishing sector in India faced a threat of unprecedented magnitude.
The participants stressed the need for traditional and small-scale fishermen to mobilise themselves for a movement against the threats.
