: A mechanical engineering graduate of Nadavyal in Wayanad, Libin Babu, has developed an electronic device which, he claims, would help minimise human-wildlife conflict.
The elephant alert system will provide early warning to people living on the fringes of forests through satellite communication, Mr. Babu said.
The system consists of a surveillance unit, comprising a night vision-enabled camera with sensors and a master control unit with a monitor and siren to alert forest officials. Instant information would be delivered to the public through SMS alert, Mr. Babu said.
When an elephant crosses before the surveillance unit, an alert will be transmitted to the master control unit to be set up in the nearest forest office and a siren will alert officials on duty. The officials can track the movement of the wildlife and can alert the public through satellite communication, he said.
Mr. babu conceived the idea when he was doing internship in Mechatronics in Thailand a few months ago. He took nearly three months to develop the device, with the assistance of his uncle Thomas, an electronic enthusiast. “I had demonstrated the device to senior Forest Department officials,” he said.
