Drive against poor sanitation launched

July 05, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 06:01 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Health department officials have served notices on scores of households in and around Alappuzha town to keep the surroundings clean during the past few days. The initiative was part of an ongoing drive to maintain clean environment to prevent vector-borne diseases. Notices were given to over 200 households and about 50 shops and establishments for not maintaining sanitary standards. The authorities are planning to follow up the measure to ensure cleanliness and to take action against  violators.

The district has been recording a large number of cases of dengue fever, rat fever and other contagious diseases after the onset of monsoon. Lack of sanitation is one of the important reasons behind the high incidence of fever during the season.  Stumps of bamboo trees and plastic fencing were identified as two sources which breed mosquitoes.
