Library council seminar ends

A demand for enacting the National Library Act was raised at a two-day national seminar organised by the District Library Council that concluded here on Sunday.

The seminar also proposed reforms to the Kerala Public Library Act. The national seminar was attended by library movement activists from different parts of the country.

The topics discussed at the seminar included promotion of scientific temper in society.

Sessions were held on the library movement activities in various States. E.P. Jayarajan, MLA, inaugurated the valedictory session. He also presented the I.V. Das award for best library to the office-bearers of the Janaranjini Library at Kolani in Idukki.

Addressing a session on March 7, Prof. Sabyasachi Chatterjee of Indian Institute of Astrophysics said only through scientific education and temper that a society could become enlightened.

Freethinking and scientific temperament will lead to growth of the spirit of humanism, he added. Historian K.N. Ganesh said the spiritual foundation alone could not help a culture survive.
