The Cabinet decision to upgrade the Kannur Municipality to a city Corporation has been greeted by the district Congress.
In a statement here on Wednesday, the District Congress committee (DCC) president K. Surendran said the Oommen Chandy government’s decision to upgrade the municipality to a corporation would give a new facelift to the town.
The decision was the latest of a series of developmental projects implemented by the government in the district over the past three years.
The developmental projects launched here by the Chandy government included the Azhikkal port, Handloom Village, tourism-related project at the Fort St. Angelo, container freight station, formation of the Iritty Taluk, and the indoor stadium at Mundayad, he said. The DCC president also welcomed the Cabinet decision to form new municipalities of Panur, Iritty, and Anthur in the district.
With the Cabinet decision to upgrade the Kannur Municipality, a long-standing demand of the people of Kannur had materialised. Kannur is one of the oldest municipalities in the State as it was formed during the British rule.
The DCC says the decision to upgrade the municipality to a Corporation will give a new facelift to the town.
