The daughter-in-law of Bhaskara Karnavar, who was found murdered in the bedroom of his residence in Chengannur here on Sunday, was arrested by the police on Thursday.
According to the police, Sherin, wife of Binu, the second son of the 65-year-old Karnavar, was arrested on the suspicion that she was involved in the murder and of having close ties with those who committed the murder. The murder is suspected to have been committed to usurp the property of Karnavar, who had recently returned to his hometown in Cheriyanadu of Chengannur from the United States.
Several valuable items, including a laptop and golden ‘rudraksham’ chain, were found missing from his room after the murder. The servants and driver of Karanavar and other relatives were also being questioned in connection with the murder.
Following reports that there were unknown visitors to the house on Saturday night and that these persons had left for Bangalore after the murder have prompted a police team to move to Karnataka as well.
Police said there were arguments within the family after Karanavar had divided his property between his two sons and two daughters and that this could have led to the murder.
