The dam-break analysis study continued on the second day on Friday on the downstream portion of the Idukki dam till Aluva.
The study has been conducted by S.K. Mishra, associate professor of Water Resources Development and Management Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, with the help of Irrigation Department executive engineer Tomy George.
They visited the Pampla dam in Lower Periyar and the Bhuthathanketuu before proceeding to Aluva. The details of the dam structure at Lower Periyar, the velocity of the water flowing through the Periyar, normal rain fall rate and the electricity production were inquired by Mr Mishra. The Kerala State Electricity Board officials handed over the data to Mr. Mishra.
The study was to analyse the aftereffect in the downstream portion of Idukki dam in case of a dam -break in Mullaperiyar.
The additional water from Idukki dam is diverted through the shutters of the Cheruthoni dam in to the Periyar and in its downstream portion the Pampla dam in Lower Periyar is situated.
In Bhuthathankettu also, Mr Mishra collected the same details.
Mr George said that the two-day visit was completed and all the data will be compiled to submit the final report to the State government on January 15.
The KSEB officials also accompanied the team and provided documentary evidences on various aspects including the present condition of the dams in the downstream of the Idukki dam.
The water from Mullaperiyar reaches Idukki and from there it is diverted to the Pampla dam.
In case the Idukki dam could not afford the water how it is to be diverted is also inquired in to. Mr Mishra also collected the details of the areas through which the water passes when there is an overflow The time it reaches at various places, its intensity and the topography of the area were also studied. He also collected details of the people to be affected and the losses to be suffered in case there was an overflow of water.
