A modernised dairy under the Ernakulam Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (ERCMPU) of MILMA was inaugurated by Minister for Dairy Development K. Raju here on Saturday.
The Minister said the dairy sector was in a period of growth with 11% increase in milk production in the past eleven months. “If we move at this pace, we will be able to attain self-sufficiency in milk production within the next one year,” he said.
Former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, while inaugurating a pasteurisation plant and milk parlour, said the Kottayam dairy had passed through difficult times earlier. At present, it had made the district almost self-sufficient in milk production, he pointed out.
“Soon we will be able to attain self-sufficiency in the dairy sector,” he said, and added that this was the beginning of the shift from the State’s dependence on neighbouring States on vegetables, meat, and egg.
