CPI(M) slams hike in taxes

March 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:52 am IST - ALAPPUZHA:

Former minister and CPI(M) leader G. Sudhakaran, MLA, has criticised the United Democratic Front (UDF) government for increasing various taxes in a ‘unilateral manner’.

Launching a demonstration organised by the CPI(M) in front of the Alappuzha municipal office here on Friday, Mr. Sudhakaran alleged that the hikes were introduced in an attempt to divert public focus from the rampant corruption that had affected the functioning of the government.

“While the Left Democratic Front (LDF) was never against introducing tax hikes whenever the necessity arose, such decisions could be made only by holding consultations and gauging public opinion. However, the government decided to implement the move without raising the issue for discussion at the Legislative Assembly. The UDF has the responsibility to clarify its stance and justify the move before the commoners,” Mr. Sudhakaran said.

The district committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) organised demonstrations across the district on Friday in protest against various policies of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government.
