Convention against paddy field conversion today

The anti-foreign investment action council national convener Kashmirilal will inaugurate a people’s convention against conversion of paddy fields and wetland at Aranmula on Sunday.

Jurist V.R. Krishna Iyer will deliver the keynote message on nature conservation at the convention to be organised by the Thiruvaranmula Paithruka Grama Karma Samiti at Vijayananda Vidyapeeth. In a statement, P.R. Shaji, samiti convener, said Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi all-India chairman P. Gopinathan Nair would preside over the meet. He said the meet would chalk out the future course of agitation, mobilise support of organisations against the move to convert vast expanses of Aranmula puncha (paddy land) and wetland.

Thuravur Suresh, Kerala Pulayar Maha Sabha organising secretary, Varughese Muryad, Thrissur Kol Karshaka Samiti president; Thazhava Sahadevan, Scheduled Caste Samyukta Samara Samiti general secretary, and Kummanam Rajashekharan, TPGKS president, will address the meet. Mr. Shaji said the convention would launch an campaign to form a base for agitation, cutting across socio-religious borders.
