Congress workers staged a protest inside the chamber of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) Superintendent Engineer here on Thursday in protest against the disruption of water supply in the Kannur municipal area for the past eight days.

The protestors led by Congress workers T.O. Mohanan and V.V. Purushothaman barged into the office of Superintendent Engineer P.V. Gopinath here around 11 a.m. They alleged that the KWA officials had taken no steps to resume regular supply of water.

Kannur MLA A.P. Abdullakutty reached the office of Mr. Gopinath around 12 noon and engaged in a heated exchange with him over the repeated disruption of water supply in the area for days together. Mr. Gopinath said that suspension of pumping at the pumping station due to problems in the power supply was the cause of the disruption.

The protest ended by 12.15 p.m. when Mr. Gopinath told the protestors that water supply would be restored in the town area when water reached the overhead tank in the evening.
