Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is in a stable condition and he can be discharged from hospital after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Mullasari Ajit Sankardas, director, Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, Madras Medical Mission, said here on Monday.
Mr. Chandy has been admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital here as he complained of discomfort and uneasiness.
Dr. Sankardas, the Chief Minister’s physician for the past three years, told presspersons that doctors had conducted an angiogram on Mr. Chandy and no new blocks were found. He would require three to four days of complete rest after being discharged from hospital. Mr. Chandy had undergone an angioplasty in Chennai in 2010. He has been under medication since then.
“He can go back to active political activity, of course, with some restrictions, mostly dietary and exercise,” he added.
While staying at the PWD Travellers’ Bungalow on Sunday night, Mr. Chandy complained of dizziness, following which a team of senior doctors here kept him under observation from 9 p.m. They set up an emergency ICU in one of the rooms.
In the morning, Mr. Chandy was eager to go to Alappuzha to join Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in the Yuva Kerala Yatra. Under persuasion from the doctors, he agreed to undergo a check-up at the medical college hospital.
V.L. Jayaprakash, Professor of Cardiology at the medical college, told The Hindu that Mr. Chandy was brought in with low blood pressure.
The hospital authorities formed a special team of doctors from the departments of Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Nephrology and they were in contact with Dr. Sankardas, who was in Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Chandy, who arrived by 8 a.m., underwent an angiogram in the afternoon, after which Dr. Sankardas gave the media briefing.
His daughter Mariam Oommen is with him. His wife, Mariamma Oommen, is in Dubai with their younger daughter, Achu Oommen. His son, Chandy Oommen, is in New Delhi. Cancelled Mr. Chandy’s programmes scheduled for Tuesday have been cancelled. A press note issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said that doctors had advised Mr. Chandy three days’ rest.
