Kindness and compassion towards the poor and downtrodden made former Archbishop of Thrissur Mar Joseph Kundukulam great, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said.

He was addressing a public meeting in connection with the birth centenary celebrations of Mar Kundukulam. The Chief Minister presented the Mar Joseph Kundukulam Foundation Award to Padma awardee Sister Sudha Varghese, who has been working among Dalits in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

The celebrations started with the Holy Mass led by Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath.

Sister Sudha Varghese, hailing from Kuruppanthara in Kottayam district, has been working for the Musahar people in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for the past 51 years. She was awarded the Padmasree for her services in 2006.
