The Town police here registered a case against nearly 1,000 Left Democratic Front (LDF) workers, including Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLAs K.K. Narayanan and C. Krishnan and party leaders, in connection with the attack on Chief Minister Oommen Chandy here on Sunday.
The police arrested 14 CPI(M) workers and a Revolutionary Socialist Party worker and booked them under IPC Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) as also under the Prevention of Damage to the Public Property Act.
The arrested included district panchayat member M. Kunhiraman, 62, Taliparamba municipal vice-chairman Komath Muraleedharan, 48, and former Elayavur panchayat president K. Rajeevan, 53. The arrested were among the initial list of 22 LDF workers booked by the police.
The two CPI(M) MLAs who were present among the protesting LDF workers near the Police Club, where stones were thrown at the Chief Minister’s convoy of vehicles, were also among hundreds of LDF workers against whom the police registered cases in connection with the attack.
In police custody
The police also registered cases against CPI(M) leaders P.K. Sreemathy, P. Jayarajan and M.V. Jayarajan who were at different protest venues on Sunday.
The arrested were remanded in police custody till November 11 by the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court here. The Kannur City Police Station where the arrested were taken witnessed tense moments in the morning when a group of CPI(M) workers, led by leaders P. Jayarajan, M.V. Jayarajan, held a march to protest against the arrest.
The police stopped them at the entrance to the station.
No incidents of violence were reported on Monday in connection with the protest of the United Democratic Front here against the attack on Mr. Chandy.
In an isolated incident on Sunday, four Congress workers and a CPI(M) worker were injured in a clash at Thillankeri near Mattannur. A Congress worker was rushed to a hospital in Kozhikode with serious stab injuries.
UDF workers staged a protest march in the town in the evening to condemn the attack on the Chief Minister.
