Demand to probe him in connection with Varapuzha case

The government on Saturday removed A.V. George, Superintendent of Police, from the post of District Police Chief (DPC), Ernakulam Rural, as the demand to investigate him in connection with the Varapuzha custodial death case got increasingly shriller.

Mr. George has been transferred to a relatively low-key post in the Police Academy, Thrissur. The government had asked Rahul Nair, DPC, Thrissur, to stand in for Mr. George.

Top officers said Mr. George was not so far the target of the criminal investigation into the custodial murder of S.R. Sreejith. However, the police deemed that his public comment defending the erroneous police action was unwarranted. They also concluded that Mr. George’s continuation as DPC would trigger more protests against the police.

The Crime Branch (CB) investigation into the custodial death had deflated Mr. George’s narrative that Sreejith was one among the 14 persons wanted for the attack on the house of one Vasudevan in March.
