A Romanian, suspected to be involved in a case of ATM skimming in Thiruvananthapuram, has been arrested in Mumbai. A team of Kerala Police has left for Mumbai to take him into custody.

“The Mumbai Police will first produce him before a court there and only then we will get him in custody,” a police official said.

The Kerala Police on Tuesday zeroed in on three persons from Romania, suspected to be the key players behind the hi-tech ATM robbery, and decided to seek the Interpol’s help.

A camera installed on the premises captured them installing an electronic device inside the ATM kiosk of a public sector bank at Vellayambalam. It is suspected that the electronic device enabled the fraudsters to collect the secret pin codes and card details. Many of the bank customers came to know about the fraud after receiving text messages on Monday, informing them that money had been withdrawn from their accounts.

According to police, the three had come to India on June 25 and reached Kerala on July 8. They had come on tourist visa.

About Rs. 2.5 lakh in cash has been lost, police said.
