I rate Adoor Gopalakrishnan as one of India’s three greatest directors of all time; Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen are the others, said film-maker Girish Kasaravalli. He is different from other filmmakers in his treatment of a film; the way he constructs a film is not a usual one.

I have always admired his minimalist approach to cinema. His films score highly both in content and style. He does not create drama in films, he rather focuses on ideas. One of the reasons why I respect him is that he respects his audience. He gives them the freedom to interpret.

The way I have interpreted Anantharam — which I regard as one of his best films — might be different from another viewer, or even Adoor himself. And I could prove to him that my viewpoint is the correct one.

My favourite film by Adoor is Mukhamukham ; it is metaphorical and is much more than a socio-political film. Elippathayam , Vidheyan, and Kathapurushan are also in my list of Adoor’s best films.
