The allotments to engineering and medical courses is progressing as per schedule and there is no need for worry, Health Minister K.K. Shylaja has said.

In a press note issued here on Thursday, the Minister pointed out that as per the directions of the Medical Council of India (MCI) the first round of counselling for the all India MBBS quota should be completed by July 15. Following this, the allotments for the State quota should be completed by July 24.

As per the order of the Supreme Court, the third and final round of allotment to engineering courses had to be completed by July 20. Since a vast number of students in the State opted for both engineering and medicine, the entrance commissioner is conducting the first round of allotment for medical courses along with the last round of allotment to engineering courses.

The Fee Regulatory Committee had taken a decision on the fee for medical/dental courses on July 13. Some colleges had approached the court against this. The court’s verdict came on July 17. After the verdict, the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations had asked self-financing colleges to submit details of seats in those colleges. This was not done by the institutions.

This, coupled with the MCI guidelines that the first round of counselling should begin on July 16 had led to a situation where the first round of counselling was for government medical and dental colleges.

According to the schedule of the MCI the second round of counselling for medical courses in the all India quota would be held between August 1 and 7. Following this the counselling for the State quota would be done between August 8 and 19. As per this schedule, it is difficult to publish the State quota allotment ahead of the second round of counselling for the national quota.

If this is not done, a large number of candidates who would opt for the national quota seats would end up choosing State quota seats. This, in turn, would make medical education unattainable for a large number of students in the State.

The CEE would make allotment to all seats in self-financing medical/dental colleges between August 8 and 19. The government is within its rights to hold spot admissions for subsequent vacancies. The CEE has been asked to explore the possibility of holding another round of allotment for medical seats before conducting spot admissions.
