Akademi awards for musicians, artistes

The Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi on Thursday announced awards in fields such as music, dance, theatre and traditional art forms for the year 2016. The awards carry cash prize, citation, and certificates.

G. Kumaravarma (Theatre); P.R. Kumara Kerala Varma (Carnatic Music); and Nirmala Panicker (Mohiniyattam) received Akademi fellowships .

Winners of the awards in various categories are: Kottakkal Chandrasekhara Warrier (Kathakali Vesham); Kottakal Madhu (Kathakali –music); Kottakkal Ravi (Maddalam); Kalamandalam Krishnandas (Chenda); V.V. Ravi (Violin); R. Vaidyanathan (Mridangam); Adoor P. Sudharsanan (Carnatic Music); Njaralath Harigovindan (Sopana Sangeetham); Kalamandalam Himavathi (Mohiniyattam): Suraj Sathyan (Kathaprasangam); Kuttur Prasannakumar (Padayani); Mannoor Chandran (Porattu Natakam); Keezhillam Unnikrishnan (Mudiyettu); Kozhikode Saradha (Drama – actress); A. Santhakumar (Drama – script, direction); C.K. Sasi (drama -script); and Chengannur Sreekumar (light music).

Arunlal won the C.I. Parameswara Pillai Memorial Endowment for drama and Praseeda Chalakudy, the T.P. Sukumaran Memorial endowment for folk art.

Artists selected for Gurupuja awards are: K.S. Narayanaswami (Carnatic Music); Lesley Peter (instrumental music): Thuppettan (M. Subrahmanyan Namboothiri) (drama); Kalanilayam Peter (drama); Tedy Lopus (drama); Vattaparambil Peethambaran (drama); K.N. Amrutham Gopinath (dance); P.G. Janardhanan (dance); A.P. Babu (make-up); Parayail Mohanan (Kathaprasangam); S.V. Peer Mohammed (Mappilapattu); P. Kannan (Pula Theyyam, Mariyattam); Leena Antony (drama ); KPAC Leela (drama ); A.R. Ratheesan (drama ) and Nadakayogam Raghu (drama).
