AITUC to campaign for Athirappilly project

June 22, 2010 08:32 pm | Updated November 28, 2021 08:44 pm IST - Kottayam:

Kanam Rajendran, State general secretary of the All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), has appealed to the Central government to give clearance for the Athirappilly hydel project.

Speaking at a press meet here on Tuesday, Mr. Rajendran pointed out that Kerala faces a considerable power shortage and this could be overcome only commissioning the project. “Owing to the large demand for electricity, the State is compelled to purchase power from other States. The Athirappilly project would help in overcoming this situation to a large extent,” he said.

He also highlighted the need to strike a balance between the feasibility and the ramifications of the project. As part of spreading awareness, AITUC will hold a convention at the Thrissur town hall on July 9. Further campaigns will be announced shortly.

V.B. Binu, AITUC State Secretary, attended the press meet.
