The works of the proposed airstrip, that would provide much needed momentum to the ongoing development projects to turn the areas surrounding the famed Bekal fort as a major global tourist destination, is likely to be completed by the end of 2013.
The works of the airstrip proposed in 84 acre land, that could operate smaller aircraft capacity, would commence shortly once the government issues notification to acquire 30 acres land owned by private parties, Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) Managing Director Shaji Madhavan told the Hindu on Wednesday.
He said District Collector V. N. Jitendran is expected to visit the spot on January 21 before deciding on allocating 54 acre revenue land for constructing the airport, which would provide much needed connectivity from Mangalore and Kannur airports to the imposing Bekal fort facing the Arabian Sea.
Mr. Madhavan said the BRDC had sent a proposal to the Revenue Department for taking steps to acquire the private land proposed for airstrip and was awaiting government notification to this effect before formally commencing the works.
The rehabilitation process of the four families in all probability would not pose major hurdle as the BRDC is exploring options of allocating suitable land to the displaced family, he said.
While the BRDC has been entrusted with responsibility of the airstrip, the Cochin International Airport Authority (CIAL) would take care of the technical aspects, he said.
The areas surrounding the Bekal fort is brimming with flurry of activities to turn the area as a global tourist destination as two of the six hotels and resorts with five star facilities have already begun functioning while the works of the remaining are going on in full swing.
The BRDC has built 18 KM long approach roads to the upcoming hotels and resorts at an estimated cost of Rs. 21 crores in localities falling under Ajanur, Pallikkare, Uduma and Chemnad panchayats, he said.
