Council blocks quarry-bound lorries

April 02, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:51 am IST - PATHANAMTHITTA:

A People’s Action Council staged a dawn-to-dusk satyagraha in protesting against illegal granite quarrying at Thudiyurulippara at Vallikkode in the Pramadom panchayat on Wednesday.

A large number of villagers, a majority of them women and children, assembled near a hill at 5.30 p.m. under the aegis of the council to block the quarry-bound trucks.

The Thudiyurulippara and the granite quarry there were in the news recently following the vandalisation of a shrine there on March 16. The idol and a spear were found missing. The Malanada Devaswom Trust and the local people suspected that the attack was the handiwork of the goons of the quarry lobby.

Tension in area

The police was deployed in strength as tension prevailed in the locality following a minor attack on the protesters by a group of people. Human rights activist Vijitha inaugurated the satyagraha.
