Half the grama panchayats to have women chiefs

At least 26 of the total 53 grama panchayats in Idukki districts will have women presidents after the coming local body polls, according to the notification published by the Election Commission. Of these, Elappara, Devikulam, Munnar and Upputhara grama panchayats will have women members from the Scheduled Castes as presidents. The posts of the president in Elliyamattom and the newly-formed tribal grama panchayat of Edamalakudy are reserved for women members from the Scheduled Tribes.

The posts of president in Konnathady, Vellathooval, Kokkayar, Peruvanthanam, Vattavada, Marayur, Alakkode, Karimannur, Arakkulam, Kamakshy, Vathikudy, Ayyappancoil, Kanchiyar, Karunapuram, Nedumkandam, Rajakumari, Senapathy, Edavetty, Kumaramangalam and Muttom grama panchayats are reserved for women.

Presidents' posts in four grama panchayats—Kumily, Santhanpara, Chinnakanal and Udumbanchola—are reserved for members from the Scheduled Castes. In Kanhikuzhy grama panchayat, the post of the president is reserved for the Scheduled Tribes.

The remaining 22 grama panchayats will have presidents from the general category.
