Five persons of family were killed in a car-bus collision on the National Highway at Nangiarkulangara, near Kayamkulam, shortly after noon on Thursday.

The victims were occupants of the car. A six-year-old girl, Sida, who was also in the car had a miraculous escape. She has been hospitalised with injuries.

The victims, hailing from Clappana in Kollam district, were Abdul Latif, 40, who was driving the car; Mahmood, 75; his wife, Nabeesa 65; his sister Mariumma 60; and her daughter, Femina, 29. Sida, who survived, is Femina’s daughter.

The car collided with the luxury bus, which was operating daily services between Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram.

Eyewitnesses said the bus was speeding and the accident occurred when it overtook a KSRTC bus.

In the impact of the accident, the car was thrown up and it crashed into the roadside, which is at a lower elevation.

Four persons in the car died on the spot. Mahmood was declared dead at the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Sida is undergoing treatment at the hospital.

The driver of the bus managed to escape from the scene.

The police said the accident occurred at about 12.15 p.m., close to the Nangiarkulangara police station.

The bus was on its way to Thiruvananthapuram and the car towards Haripad. The Nangiarkulangara police have registered a case.
