Kashmir CPI(M) protests price rise, power cuts

January 19, 2011 12:15 am | Updated 12:15 am IST - JAMMU:

Hundreds of Communist Party of India (Marxist) activists from across the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration in Srinagar, carrying banners and placards, against price rise, power failure and non-availability of essential commodities.

The youth, who were pro-active in raising slogans, were demanding guarantee of livelihood to educated unemployed youth.

Addressing the rally, State secretary of the CPI (M) M.Y. Tarigami said that under the deregulation system, in the space of one month, the prices of petrol had been increased twice by Rs. 2.96 and Rs. 2.52 a litre.

The deregulation of prices is meant to help private oil companies and put people at the mercy of a market controlled by the oil MNCs and domestic corporate houses.

“The economic policies of the government have pushed more than 50 per cent of the population into extreme poverty,” Mr. Tarigami said.
