Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai said a local group of youth had visited the house of the girl in Mudigere, who committed suicide, twice. He gave an assurance that the police would arrest all the accused in the case. “The girl did not eat for about 30 hours before she committed suicide. This shows she was highly disturbed by the developments,” the SP told presspersons here on Wednesday.

The 20-year-old girl committed suicide at her residence in Mudigere on January 6 allegedly after she was harassed by a group of youth for being friendly with a Muslim boy.

Preliminary investigations show that many people had called her and messaged her. “Many had sent her messages. A group of local people had visited her place and scolded her parents. During their first visit, the girl was not at home. The same group showed up again when the girl was at home, and took her to task alleging that she had a friend from a different religion,” the SP said. The police have arrested M.V. Anil, a BJP leader, while the other accused are absconding.

Regarding a message from Bajrang Dal warning girls against having association with boys from other faiths, the SP said the police had collected information and a case would be booked in this regard. The police would also arrest those who had sent the girl messages. Further, the SP said the police would register a case against leaders of Hindutva groups who spoke against Mudigere PSI on social media and news channels.
