The long wait for the district to get a traffic police station has finally ended — six years after its formation — with the inauguration of the station on Sunday.
“We have deployed 19 traffic police personnel— two sub-inspectors and two assistant sub-inspectors, 10 head constables and five constables,” Vinayaka Patil, Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu on Monday.
The traffic police personnel are expected to be deployed at every circle in the city, particularly at Subhash and Shastry chowks, where two inter-state highways — Basavakalyan-Gooty and Sindagi-Kodangal— intersect.
Mr. Patil said that the personnel have been asked to book cases or impose fine on traffic violators and added that four to five women police personnel and home guards would be deployed soon.
There has always been a demand from the residents of the city to deploy police personnel outside the railway station and on Chitapur Road, which are prone to traffic jams.
The District and Sessions Court complex is very close to the office of the Deputy Commissioner and the road often witnesses traffic snarls as private vehicles park near the court.
“The department has to deploy traffic personnel near the court to ensure smooth movement of vehicles,” a lawyer said.
