Work on erecting the Cauvery River Gallery, an ambitious project of the State government, began here on Thursday with officials visiting Kannada Karanji Bhavan, where the structure will come up.
Director of National Council of Science Museums, Samarendra Kumar from National Academy of Sciences, and Jayashree from Knowledge Commission discussed various aspects with Karnataka Exhibition Authority chairman R. Murthy, chief executive officer Shashikumar and assistant executive engineer Sindhu. The project is estimated to cost Rs. 3.5 crore.
The gallery will showcase life, culture and biodiversity supported by the river and will be the first river gallery in south India. The officials of NASI and the State Tourism Department had signed an agreement for establishing the gallery in Karnataka Exhibition Authority complex. The NSAI would execute the project and take up maintenance for three years. The NSAI will train local authorities to maintain and administer the gallery.
In an informal chat with presspersons, Mr. Kumar said that the gallery would highlight the geological and ecological characteristics of the Cauvery, apart from projecting the social and cultural characteristic features of civilisations that have evolved along the banks of the river.
The gallery is expected to be thrown open in the next few months.
