The government has zeroed in on an individual to head the expert committee to study and make recommendations on issues related to the safety of women and children in the State.

Replying to a discussion in the Legislative Council on the increase in incidents of sexual assaults on children in the State, Minister for Home K.J. George said a person who had a sound political and legal knowledge had been approached to head the 15-member expert committee comprising MLAs, MLCs representatives from non-government organisations and experts. “The government will ask the committee to submit its report at the earliest and implement its recommendations on a priority,” he assured the members.

Prosecution board

Admitting that there was an increase in the number of acquittals in cases of attacks on women and children, Mr. George said the government would implement the Supreme Court order to set up a prosecution board, to prevent such acquittals. The board would review cases of acquittal and train prosecutors and investigators to make the case stronger, he said.

Refuting claims of the Opposition that extension of night life was responsible for the increase in attack on women, Mr. George said that there was no question of going back on the decision of extending nightlife.
