Bidar police arrested four persons on charges of assaulting a woman after accusing her of being a witch.

The accused, Bhagawant Mule, Sandeep Mule, Pundalik Reddy and Arun Mane, along with others tried to set a woman on fire after beating her up and accusing her of engaging in ‘Bhanamati’ and other black magic tricks in Rajola village in Basava Kalyan taluk on February 27.

Some residents of the village alerted the Basava Kalyan rural police.

A team of officers including A. Bheemsha, Anuraj and Sanjiv rushed to the spot and rescued the woman.

Sudheer Kumar Reddy, Superintendent of Police, has warned district residents to stay away from such incidents and to report them to the police. Any kind of participation in or witnessing of an assault on those accused of black magic are serious crimes. Those found involved will be booked under relevant laws, he said in a release.
